Falling
Have you ever had a rug ripped out from underneath you? Literally or figuratively, they both have a similar feeling (I know this from personal experience.)
One minute you’re happily walking along, and the next minute you find yourself overcome with this dropping feeling in your gut. Your endocrine system immediately floods your body with enough adrenaline to make you both equally super alert and super nauseous. It all ends with a very painful thud.
Truth be told, that instant of fear suddenly overcomes you. You have no idea what’s happening or why it’s happening. All you know is that suddenly everything is wrong. Even after hitting the ground, that gut wrenching feel is there, maybe even stronger, your heart is jumping out of your chest. You feel ‘wrong.’ That wrongness doesn’t go away soon after. Chances are, that wrongness will continue on with you long after you get up. This is especially true when you can’t figure out what caused you to lose your balance. Even if you do, there is that constant and craving fear that you will fall again.
I had a similar situation happen recently. I don’t think I’ve stopped falling.
