Legalize Prostitution – Not just about “me”

So, occasionally, I have these discussions on Facebook that I just feel the need to share. This time a Facebook page I was on proposed that prostitution should be legal.

It is a crime. It damages and demoralizes both men and women. It opens society to a whole host of problems. It takes advantage of desperation and depravity. Contrary to popular belief, the United States is meant to have government. Not all, overreaching government, but the Founding Fathers knew that people needed SOME authority and SOME governance.

This is one of those cases where the side effects FAR outweigh the benefits. Stable society needs a stable family structure. People should be encouraged to marry, have children, and raise them. Not simply because of moral reasons, but because studies have shown that the key to developed and contributing members of society often rests on a positive home life.

Allowing people to either cheat on their wives or avoid the intimacy required to develop a romantic relationship and avoid the commitment is NOT the way we produce a well-adjusted, upright society.

•     Matthew Edmund Except that they do harm more than yourself. They harm both individuals. They harm the fabric of our society (the family unit). They affect the cities they work. It increases the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (which increase mortality rates and lower fertility rates).We already legislate morality. Killing is a moral issue. Stealing is a moral issue. Speed limits. Zoning regulations. They all are for the better welfare of society as a whole.When you live in a Democratic Republic, each individual has the right to influence laws. You’re telling me that YOUR belief of morality supersedes mine because yours is allowing something inherently harmful. That’s just arrogance. You can’t tell me I’m wrong without committing the same offense you’re accusing me of.

•     Matthew EdmundI love the comments about “Sharia Law” and “Legislating Morality”. I’m not basing my position on morality. I’m basing my decision on facts.

  •          Prostitution greatly increases exploitation of women and human trafficking.

  •         Transmission of sexually transmitted diseases significantly increases

  •         The men sleeping with prostitutes are also sleeping with other women, spreading the sexually transmitted diseases—including their wives who have no clue.

  •         The sex industry in-general damages the family unit.

  •         Research has shown that children with one mother and one father are far more stable and successful (in-general)

  •         Divorce, in-general, lowers the lifespan of the divorcees. Children are more inclined to crime. They too will statistically have broken relationships in adulthood. Further adding to the destabilization. (I’m not proposing no divorce, just stating the results, which, is an issue of morality and fidelity).

  •         All of this adds up.You’re delusional to think that it’s “just their own body”. You live in a society. You interact with other people. Your decisions have consequences that go beyond you. You raise children (or abort, or abandon them). That adds up. You can pretend to live in this little relativistic bubble where nothing you individually do matters, but the reality is that it DOES matter. It hurts society as a whole. And that IS my business.

  Says who? You’ve decided in your head that prostitution is an individual right…but on whose authority? Who determines what is and is not a right? Who grants those rights? How are they granted?I don’t know where you’re from, but here in the United States we’ve established that it’s the governments job to look out for “the general welfare” in the preamble of our Constitution.”We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

 

1.          Prostitution leads to loss of liberty of the women forced and coerced to participate (which will happen, regardless of your laws.
2.          Destabilization and undermining of societal structure is NOT in the General Welfare of The People.
